Day on the Hill is an inspiring event that unites supporters around important causes, providing a platform to meet with lawmakers and advocate for key pieces of legislation. This year, SAC is excited to partner with the Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic & Sexual Violence on April 1st. Together, we’ll amplify our voices in pursuit of transformational change.
Never been to a Day on the Hill? Here’s a 2-minute preview of how we work together to make our voices heard at the Capitol.
Every year, SAC backs and might even help create policies designed to mold Tennessee into a more survivor-centered state. We work on increasing access to services, making it simpler to hold abusers accountable, and ensure survivors are considered when legislation is created.
For 2026, we have two pieces we're focusing on:
Sen. Kerry Roberts & Rep. Bob Freeman
Clarifies that anyone sexually assaulted under the age of 18 can receive rape kits (forensic exams) without parental consent.
Sen. Bobby Harshbarger & Rep. John Gillespie
Secures funding for a dedicated, state-funded coordinator position to standardize and oversee local sexual assault response teams (SART).
To ensure we stay on track, please plan to arrive and park by 8:30 AM. This allows enough time to navigate parking, pass through security, and walk through the building. We will begin our program promptly at 9:00 AM.
Location: Tennessee State Capitol - Conference Room 8C.
The dress code for the day is Business Casual.
While we have a set schedule for our legislative visits, advocacy requires flexibility. Last-minute timing adjustments often happen due to floor votes or committee changes.
While we expect to wrap up by 1:00 PM, please be aware that some meetings may be pushed into the early afternoon. We recommend leaving a small buffer in your personal schedule to account for these potential shifts.
We will have a table set up in the café that will serve as our “home base” from 12:00–3:00 PM. Please check in before you leave or stick around to recap your meetings with us.
Register here: Day on the Hill - April 1st (Deadline to register is March 23rd)
Volunteers don't have to meet with lawmakers to participate in Day on the Hill. You have the option to engage in other activities, such as writing letters, tabling, and more. However, many people do want to join these meetings. Navigating the halls of the Capitol can feel fast-paced, but you won't be doing it alone! Here is what to expect during our legislative visits and how to make the most of your time:
Since legislative meetings move quickly, use this simple "Hook, Heart, and Help" framework to keep your story impactful and brief:
Introduce yourself and your connection to the district.
"My name is [Name], and I’m a constituent from [City/County]."
Share a high-level "why" behind your advocacy.
"Right now, survivors in our state are not getting the care they need during their darkest hour. After a close friend was assaulted, I watched her be denied a rape kit at two different facilities simply because there was no coordination on where to find a SANE nurse. We are here today because no survivor should have to 'shop around' for medical care. A statewide SART Coordinator would ensure that the next person in her shoes gets help immediately."
Connect it back to the bill.
"That’s why I’m asking you to support the SART Coordinator Act today. Thank you for listening."
We recommend arriving by 8:30 AM. That way you have plenty of time to find parking, walk to the building, and find the room.
Tennessee State Capitol - Conference Room 8C.
For the most budget-friendly option, we recommend parking at the library, though it does require a 0.5-mile walk to the Capitol. While limited street parking is available nearby, it must be renewed every two hours.
You can also click here to explore additional downtown parking lots and garages.
Find Conference Room 8C. You'll connect with other volunteers and be provided a brief training and overview by our team once you get there.
Community Relations Manager, Atarah A.M. Smith at ataraham@sacenter.org. You can also call or text at 615-258-5867.
The dress code is Business Casual, and we encourage everyone to wear purple or teal to show our collective support for survivors. We will also have SAC teal ribbons available for you to add to your outfit.
To maintain a professional look for our meetings with lawmakers, we recommend pairing a blazer with your Coalition T-shirt if you choose to wear one. Above all, please prioritize comfortable shoes, as you will be doing a significant amount of walking throughout the Capitol complex.
We want you to feel confident and empowered! To help you prepare, we will provide training videos and advocacy tips on how to effectively share your story with lawmakers.
We also recommend using the Find My Legislator tool ahead of time to identify your specific representatives.
Keep an eye on your inbox! Leading up to April 1st, we’ll send out prep emails with essential resources and invite you to join virtual support sessions so we can answer any questions before we head to the Capitol.
We'll have other activities such as tabling, writing thank you notes to lawmakers, and dropping off materials/packets for lawmakers. Volunteers will have the choice to sign up for which activities they prefer in the registration link.
Yes! We are happy to provide a light breakfast to start the day and lunch for all attendees.
When you sign up, please make sure to indicate any dietary restrictions in your registration form. We will do our best to accommodate everyone’s needs so you can stay energized for our meetings with lawmakers.
